Во время Гражданской войны [ Civil War], когда оба эти штата входили в Союз [ Union], ее члены высказывались против войны и мобилизации, но не выступали открыто против федерального правительства. В 1863 после реорганизации стала называться "Орден американских рыцарей" [Order of American Knights], с 1864 именовалась "Сыны свободы" [ Sons of Liberty]. Прекратила существование в конце 60-х гг. 4 Sons of Liberty
ист"Сыны свободы"1) Массовая тайная патриотическая организация в английских колониях в Америке. Возникла в ноябре 1765 в знак протеста против Закона о гербовом сборе [ Stamp Act], исполнению которого она оказывала всяческое сопротивление. Первая ячейка была создана Дж. Лэмом [Lamb, John] и А. Сирсом [ Sears, Isaac] в г. Нью-Йорке, и вскоре ее отделения появились в большинстве крупных населенных пунктов колоний. Членами организации в основном были ремесленники, наемные рабочие, мелкие собственники. В некоторых колониях, особенно в Нью-Йорке и Коннектикуте, а также в г. Бостоне, организация приобрела форму полувоенной структуры со своей службой разведки. Формы борьбы включали как акции протеста и петиции, так и открытые насильственные действия против британских властей (поджоги, нападения на чиновников и т.п.), наиболее известным из которых было т.н. (1820-1871) Валлэндигам, Клемент ЛэйрдЮрист, политический деятель. В 1845-47 член законодательного собрания штата Огайо от Демократической партии [ Democratic Party]. В 1858-63 член Палаты представителей США [ House of Representatives] от штата Огайо. В период Гражданской войны [ Civil War] в политических кругах Севера заслужил репутацию главного критика политики федерального правительства по отношению к Конфедерации [ Confederate States of America]. Выступал против сильной центральной власти, боролся за расширение прав штатов [ states' rights] и против освобождения рабов, проповедовал идею превосходства белой расы [white supremacy]. Возглавил фракцию "медянок" [ Copperheads 3., Peace Democrats]. В 1863 был осужден военным трибуналом за предательство и выслан на Юг [Vallandingham Incident].
